My name is Alex Thompson, and I am honored to compete in the inaugural NC United Tournament of Champions, an event created to bring together a consensus of the top eight wrestlers in each projected college weight class from across North Carolina, regardless of school classification. This tournament represents exactly what I value about wrestling: facing the best competition, testing myself under pressure, and earning every opportunity. I have competed in sports since I was four years old, primarily in football and basketball. However, wrestling challenged me in a way no other sport ever had. I did not begin wrestling until my freshman year of high school, so I understood from the beginning that I would have to learn quickly, work relentlessly, and make every practice count. In only three seasons, I have qualified for the state tournament all three years and finished as the 8A state runner-up at 126 pounds last season. One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is that I have subsequently defeated every top wrestler who had previously beaten me. I do not view a loss as a final result. I view it as information, motivation, and an opportunity to become better. I study what went wrong, return to the room, make adjustments, and prepare to change the outcome the next time we meet. My success has come from more than athletic ability. I approach every match as though it could be my last, competing with urgency, discipline, and determination from the opening whistle until the final second. Whether I am ahead, behind, or facing adversity, I continue attacking, searching for points, and refusing to give my opponent an easy moment. I also believe that being a successful wrestler means being a dependable teammate. I enjoy helping new wrestlers learn the sport, encouraging younger athletes, and driving to pick up freshmen and sophomores who might otherwise have difficulty getting to practice. I want my teammates to know that I am invested in their success as much as my own. Academically, I maintain a 3.5 GPA while balancing the demands of training, competition, travel, and leadership within my team. I understand that competing at the collegiate level requires discipline in the classroom as well as on the mat, and I am committed to continuing to grow as a complete student-athlete. This season, I will compete at 138 pounds at Super 32, and my goal is to wrestle at 141 pounds in college. Although my wrestling journey began later than many of my competitors, I believe my rapid development demonstrates my potential, coachability, work ethic, and commitment to improvement. I am looking for a college wrestling program that values hard work, accountability, leadership, academic achievement, and athletes who are willing to compete for everything they earn. I am excited for the opportunity to wrestle in front of NCAA coaches at the NC United Tournament of Champions. I plan to show not only the wrestler I am today, but also the competitor, teammate, leader, and student-athlete I am determined to become at the collegiate level.
